August 1, 1505: Jacob Obrecht dies in Ferrara, aged approximately 48 years.
August 22, 2005: Four Initiums in homage to Jacob Obrecht for viola and cello by György Kurtág (79) is performed for the first time, in Anvers, Belgium. Also premiered is Kurtág’s Hommage à Jacob Obrecht for string quartet.
1998: The Supreme Court of Canada rules that Quebec is not free to secede without negotiating terms with the other provinces and the federal government. However, if Quebec does vote to secede the other governments would be obliged to negotiate a separation.
